Background of the study:
Inter-ethnic marriages play a critical role in shaping genetic diversity within populations. In Okitipupa, Ondo State, increasing trends of unions between individuals of different ethnic backgrounds have raised intriguing questions about gene flow and admixture. Contemporary research indicates that inter-ethnic marriages can enhance genetic diversity by merging distinct gene pools, thereby promoting heterozygosity and potentially reducing the prevalence of genetic disorders (Balogun, 2023). Moreover, these marital unions provide a natural experiment to study how cultural integration influences genetic variability. Studies conducted over recent years have underscored the importance of genetic admixture in fostering resilience to diseases and adaptive traits (Afolabi, 2024). The appraisal of such unions in a socio-culturally dynamic area like Okitipupa is therefore imperative. By examining the genetic markers among descendants of inter-ethnic unions, this study aims to illuminate the influence of marriage patterns on human genetic diversity and provide insights into the evolutionary implications for local communities (Emeka, 2025).
Statement of the problem:
Despite the rising prevalence of inter-ethnic marriages in Okitipupa, there is insufficient research on their impact on genetic diversity. The limited data on gene flow and admixture in these unions hinders a clear understanding of how inter-ethnic relationships shape genetic traits. This study seeks to fill that gap by evaluating the genetic outcomes of such marriages in the local population.

Research Hypotheses:
Significance of the study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into how inter-ethnic marriages enhance genetic diversity, with implications for public health and evolutionary biology. The findings will aid policymakers and researchers in understanding genetic admixture in diverse societies (Afolabi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to evaluating the genetic outcomes of inter-ethnic marriages among residents of Okitipupa Local Government Area. It does not consider external migration or non-marital genetic influences.
